History Making Footballer to be Honored at 19th Annual Caribbean American Heritage Awards

Washington, DC – Former professional footballer Shaka Hislop will be among nine other Caribbean Americans honored by the Institute of Caribbean Studies (ICS) at the organization’s 19th Annual Caribbean American Heritage Awards (CARAH). The awards will be held on November 16th at the Washington Capital Hilton, 1001 16th Street, NW, Washington, DC 20036.

Mr. Hislop, who is of Trinidadian descent, will be presented with the Excellence in Sports award. Hislop was the goalkeeper for Trinidad and Tobago’s national football team between 1999-2006. In his final year as goalkeeper, Hislop held off the Bahraini offense to secure his country’s spot in the World Cup for the first time ever. His efforts have been recognized with numerous awards and praised by fellow professional footballers.

Now a soccer analyst for EPSNFC Press Pass, Hislop provides expert commentary supported by his experience as an international footballer. Additionally, Hislop uses his football knowledge to mentor and guide younger players around the U.S. He understands the need to give back and “[does] what he thinks is right,” says Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation Technical Director Lincoln Phillips.

The CARAH Awards highlights outstanding contributions to advocacy, business, entertainment, arts and sports industries by Caribbean Americans. Other 2012 Honorees include Anya Ayoung Chee, of Project Runway fame, and Robert Greenidge, PanMaster with the Jimmy Buffett Band. The event will be hosted by anchor Maureen Bunyan of ABC News affiliate WJLA TV7.

Proceeds from the CARAH Awards will support the ICS youth entrepreneurship training program LIFESeed, Annual Caribbean American Legislative Week, the Caribbean arts & culture festival AllSPICE and ICS Embassy Evenings.
