Former Presidents Of Florida Young Democrats To Meet With President Obama

TALLAHASSEE – Wakulla County Commissioner Alan Brock and Hallandale Beach City Commissioner Alex Lewy, both former Presidents of the Florida Young Democrats, will travel to Washington, D.C. on Friday, June 17 to meet with members of the Obama Administration and attend an intimate reception with the President. Commissioners Brock and Lewy are two of a small number of members of People For the American Way Foundation’s Young Elected Officials Network, a network of young progressives in elected office, who were invited to the White House to discuss important issues facing states and localities.

“I‘m proud and humbled to be able to take the concerns, observations and ideas of North Floridians to the President,” said Commissioner Brock, president of FYD from 2007-2009. “Every city, county and state is different, and communicating to the Obama Administration our focus on economic recovery, improving our region’s education and employment prospects, and protecting our environmental resources will be my top priority while in Washington. And the training, experience and relationships I’ve gained from the Florida Young Democrats have been absolutely invaluable to me as a young elected official in Wakulla County.”

“Providing a voice for our community directly to President Obama and the Administration is not only a great honor but invaluable opportunity for our neighborhoods to enter into the national dialogue,” said Commissioner Lewy, president of FYD from 2009-2011. “I will be eager to discuss job creation, financial literacy, and economic development for our local community as well as environmental protections for our beaches and the Everglades. Growing up around World War II veterans, I also understand a top priority must be supporting our young veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. I’ll be asking for a re-invigorated national effort promoting intergovernmental programs and resources for local governments to support of our veterans.”

The Florida Young Democrats (FYD) is a youth-led political organization dedicated to educating and turning out young voters in Florida. FYD mobilizes young people under 40 to participate in the electoral process, influence the ideals of the Democratic Party and develop the skills of the youth generation to serve as leaders at the local, state and national levels.
