Former Jamaica Minister of State in South Florida to launch new books

PEMBROKE PINES – August 6, 2010 Jamaica celebrates her 48th independence anniversary and as part of the celebrations in South Florida, you are invited to attend the launch of two books authored by a son of Jamaica, Delano R. Franklyn.

Two of Delano Franklyn’s latest publications, Michael Manley: The Politics of Equality, (2009) and SPRINTING INTO HISTORY – Jamaica and the 2008 Olympics Games (2009), will be launched in Florida on Saturday, August 14, 2010 at the Broward County South Regional Library, 7300 Pines Boulevard, Pembroke Pines, Florida 1pm – 4pm. The event is free and open to the public.

Delano Franklyn is a former Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade in Jamaica from 2002-2007, and is the author of seven books. Mr. Franklyn is a practicing attorney in Kingston, Jamaica. He is a graduate of Kingston College, Mico College, The University of the West Indies and The Norman Manley Law School.
In his capacity as Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Mr. Franklyn had special responsibility for the Jamaican Diaspora community and the implementation of the bi-annual Jamaica Diaspora Conference. Franklyn was a special advisor to former Prime Minister of Jamaica the Rt. Hon. P.J. Patterson, and is currently the chairman of the Michael Manley Foundation in Jamaica.

Mr. Franklyn represents several of Jamaica’s top athletes, and is the current chairman of the Asafa Powell Foundation.

The book launch is being held under the distinguished patronage of Jamaica’s Consul General to Miami, the Hon. Sandra Grant-Griffiths. The guest speaker for the event is Dr. Heather Russell, assistant professor at Florida International University.

The event will include readings from the two books, a discussion of the subject matters and book signing. There will also be a poetry presentation by Malachi Smith a fellow Jamaican author and poet. The event is sponsored by the South Regional Broward County Library, The Broward County Board of County Commissioners, Sunset Resorts, Jamaicans.com, South Florida Caribbean News and Jamaican Dawta.
