Florida Political Leaders Sound Off On Mitt Romney

TAMPA – As Mitt Romney visits the Sunshine State, he arrives engulfed in controversy after writing off America’s hard-working middle class, calling 47% of Americans “victims” who were unwilling to “take responsibility” for their own successes.

Congresswoman Frederica Wilson released the following statement:

“Describing 47 percent of Americans as viewing themselves as ‘victims,’ entitled to handouts, and unwilling to take ‘personal responsibility’ is unbecoming of the office of the President of the United States – it betrays a broader vision where it’s acceptable to divide America, and then govern for half of it. More appalling still, Mitt Romney is running a candidacy where he saves his most heartfelt ideological beliefs not for the American people he insults, but for the donors who fill his pockets.”

Congressman Alcee L. Hastings Calls Out Romney For Writing Off Nearly Half the Country

Hastings released the following statement:

“Mitt Romney’s statement was not only misguided, but a clear indication of what he thinks of middle class and working Americans. This country needs a President that will fight for us all, and is truly committed to moving the nation forward. That is why I support President Obama, and will be voting for him this November.”

Congresswoman Corrine Brown: Leaked Romney Video Shows “What He Really Thinks Of Those He Wants To Represent”

“Mitt Romney has spent five years campaigning for the Presidency of the United States, claiming to want to improve the lives of Americans, but now we heard what he really thinks of those he wants to represent. Instead of being truthful with voters, Romney’s true character came out while he was a speaking to millionaire donors, only when he thought the doors were closed and the cameras were off.

“Right here in Florida, Romney called 47% of Americans ‘victims’ who were unwilling to take ‘personal responsibility for their lives.’ It has never been so blatantly obvious that Romney cannot relate to the everyday Americans. He doesn’t understand the sacrifices hard-working families must face each month as they pay the bills, put food on the table, and provide for their families. This video echoes Romney’s ‘I’m not concerned about the very poor’ statements from the primary. Even though he shook his etch-a-sketch in front of the public, it’s obvious how it feels when real voters aren’t there to hold him accountable.

“The people of Florida are fighting every day for their successes, and we need a leader who will fight for the middle class and ensure that every single American, not just 53%, get a fair shot, and that everyone plays by the same rules. The only choice in this election is President Obama. He has proven time and time again that he will always fight for the middle class, and those striving to be in the middle class.”

Congresswoman and DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz Romney’s Statements In The Secret Video Should Be An Awakening To All Undecided Voters

“During a private fundraiser with fellow millionaires, Mitt Romney showed his true colors – and they aren’t pretty. When Romney said that 47 percent of Americans ‘believe that they are victims,’ and that his job is ‘not to worry about those people,’ he clearly expressed what he really thinks of the majority of Americans and who he plans to serve if he were to win the White House. In essence, Americans should no longer have a doubt in their minds what will happen to this nation if Mitt Romney wins the ticket. We should no longer need to wonder what Romney’s motives are or the people that his proposed policies would benefit. We should, however, know very well that Mitt Romney has a personal contention with the majority of Americans, whom he knows nothing about, and that it is even more important now than ever to vote for President Obama. Romney’s statements in the secret video should be an awakening to all undecided voters.

Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz

This country needs a leader who not only understands its people, but who also respects them and truly cares about them all. That is the main occupation of a President of the United States. An occupation not suited for a guy like Mitt Romney.”
