Florida Democrats Celebrate Confirmation of First Latina To U.S. Supreme Court
Tallahassee – Congresswoman Karen L. Thurman, Florida Democratic Party Chair, released the following statement celebrating the historic confirmation of Justice Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court. Sotomayor is the first Hispanic-American and only the third woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court.
“With the historic confirmation of Justice Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court, today is a proud day for not only Florida but our nation.
“As the first Latina to serve on the Supreme Court, Justice Sotomayor has not only torn down one of the last remaining barriers for Hispanic-Americans, but she also today shattered another glass ceiling by being only the third woman to serve on the high court.
“As Sotomayor demonstrated throughout the confirmation process, her stirring life story and outstanding career – at nearly every level of our judicial system – makes her uniquely qualified to serve on the Supreme Court. Throughout her career on the bench, she has been lauded as a fearless jurist, with a sharp and independent mind and a deep commitment to the rule of law and our constitutional traditions.
“While we celebrate today, Floridians remain disappointed that Governor Charlie Crist once again decided to put personal ambition above doing what is right. By pandering to the fringe of his party, Crist showed once again why he is unfit to serve in the United States Senate.”
