Enabling healthy communities for sustainable Development in the Caribbean

LONDON – A Caribbean Diaspora Healthcare Advisory Group (CDHAG), from London, Birmingham and Reading will visit Kingston and Spanish Town, Jamaica between February 18-21st 2007.

The purpose of the visit is to dedicate a new Mary Seacole Heritage & Pioneers Exhibition at the Forces Military Museum, UP Park Camp, Kingston, followed by a reception supported by The Institute of Jamaica at Blundell Hall, the birthplace of Mary Seacole.

The exhibition seeks to deepen public understanding of her approach to entrepreneurship, herbalism, nursing care and her relevance to contemporary life.

The Advisory group will participate in a Knowledge Sharing Symposium hosted by Dr Andrew Wheatley, Mayor of Spanish Town and Chairman of St Catherine Parish Council, with support from RAFA International Development Agency.

These 4-day events will also professional collaboration round table meetings at local hospitals, businesses and community projects. The theme “Enabling Healthy Communities and Sustainable Development” reflects the challenges faced by governments, institutions and communities in both developed and developing countries.

The Horizons Caribbean Programme has been re-configured to focus on the role of Intellectual Capital and practice innovation to meet the needs of all stakeholders.

The members of CDHAG, represent a diverse group of individuals and institutions, with a wealth of international experience developed in the following:

• Nursing
• Midwifery
• Health visiting
• Community development
• Enterprise support
• Student education & mentoring
• Management & workforce development
• Working with HIV/AIDS patients and local
communities across Africa.

The Advisory Group also aims to provide an International Partnership Forum for the cross-sectoral Caribbean Diaspora supported by RAFA International Development Agency, to contribute to achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for combating HIV/AIDS.

A limited edition contemporary bust of Mary Seacole by George Kelly Fowokan, Sculptor has been commissioned to mark 150th Anniversary since the publication of “Wonderful Adventures of Mrs. Seacole in many lands”. There will also be a series of essays, drama, music and poetry activities amongst primary Schools, healthcare workplaces, businesses and local communities.
