Deadline for Haitians Seeking Protected Status is November 30, 2012

Miami – The Miami-Dade County Office of Community Advocacy encourages eligible Haitian nationals who wish to remain in the United States (U.S.) to apply for an extension of their Temporary Protected Status (TPS) before the November 30, 2012 deadline. Re-registrants may also apply for a new Employment Authorization Document (EAD) when they apply for a TPS extension. Haitians nationals who do not re-register before the deadline will not be eligible to extend their TPS or to receive new employment documents.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has extended TPS for Haiti for an additional 18 months. The extension will begin January 23, 2013 and end July 22, 2014. Successful applicants will have continuously resided in the U.S. since January 12, 2011. TPS beneficiaries who re-register before November 30, and are currently holding a valid EAD, will also receive an additional six months of employment eligibility. If requested, re-registrants are eligible to receive an EAD with the expiration date July 22, 2014.

Interested persons should go to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website, www.uscis.gov/tps , for more information about the TPS extension and eligibility requirements.
