D’ Limers Bring Vibrant Caribbean Culture to Komen Race For the Cure

MIAMI – D’ Limers team fielded over 225 participants and eight breast cancer survivors, its largest ever, to join a record 25,000 plus advocates for breast cancer prevention awareness and research at the 16th Annual Komen Race for the Cure in Downtown Miami.

With the musical energy of DJ Janice “Empress” Hall and hosting vibes of Giselle “D’ Wassi One” Blanche, D’ Limers rallied an eclectic mix Caribbean businesses and organizations to heighten the importance of early detection and to build support network for women impacted by breast cancer in their families. The group was honored with the presence of eight breast cancer survivors, ranging from 1 month to over 27 years.

Participants adorned themselves with Carnival headpieces from Miami Broward One Carnival 2011 and included masqueraders from as mas bands such as The Wassi Ones, Carnival Nationz, and China Mas Group. Tarrin McMayo, a Miami Heat dancer, and local radio program host, Eddy Edwards, finished the race in the fastest times of under 26 and 28 minutes respectively.

After the Walk and Run, the group enjoyed a full fare of Caribbean brunch delights, including Haitian and Jamaican bread, Trinbagonian bake and saltfish and shark, Callaloo, Breakfast quiche, ham, Tropical Smoothie Café smoothies, and Honest Tea.

“This year, we confirmed that our community is embracing our call to action. The energy was off the charts. We are making headway to save more of our women from non-discriminatory disease,” stated Marlon Hill, partner with delancyhill, P.A. and husband to breast cancer survivor, Carla Hill.
