Council For Concerned Bahamians Abroad (CBA) Announces New Executive Director Calvin Turnquest
SOUTH FLORIDA – The Council For Concerned Bahamians Abroad (CBA) has announced the appointment of Calvin Turnquest as its new Executive Director.
The Foundation’s Board of Trustees unanimously selected Mr. Turnquest, a former City of Tequesta, Florida Councilman as its new executive leader replacing Dr. Harlington Hanna Jr., who served as Chairman of the Board, and Interim Executive Director. Dr. Hanna will continue in the capacity as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Council.
During his three terms as a councilman and former vice mayor of Tequesta, Calvin Turnquest earned acclaim from supporters and opponents alike for his careful study of the issues, strong stances for fiscal responsibility and support for individual communities’ right to home rule. Calvin has been appointed to both the Palm Beach League of Cities as well as the Florida League of Cities for his innovative and successful approach to local government. Also, as a council member in Tequesta, Calvin formed an investment committee to protect excess savings, and forged cost-saving interlocal agreements on emergency services.
Born in a long line of public servants and government officials in Nassau, Bahamas, Calvin’s grandfather was Herbert Patton, a minister of the Church of God. He also has family members who served as Governor General of the Bahamas, Deputy Governor General, Deputy Prime Minister, and Cabinet Minister of various Government Departments.
Calvin arrived in Florida in 1989 to attend the University of Miami where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and met his future wife Dr. Sheryl Thompson a Board Certified Emergency Room Physician. They have been happily married for 15 years and counting.
Mr. Turnquest’s first area of focus as CBA’s Executive Director is the continued credentialing of the Foundation with various National State Departments and international organizations as an interested party in the protection and representation of the economic, family, and other interests of the more than 50,000 Bahamian-Americans, and other expatriate Bahamians wherever located around the world. He will continue CBA’s emphasis on its role and activities as a Policy Institute, and Forum at www.ourbahamas.org providing informed analysis and reporting on issues important to expatriate Bahamians, foreign investors, and Friends of The Bahamas, globally.
