Community encouraged to take part in “Africa Fest 2008: A Salute to Haitian Heritage Month”

MIAMI – Commissioner Dorrin D. Rolle, with the help of Africa Reconnect, Inc., Diaspora Arts Coalition, and Miami-Dade Park and Recreation Department, will host the sixth annual Africa Fest 2008: A Salute to Haitian Heritage Month on Saturday, May 24, 2008 at Oak Grove Park, 690 NE 159 Street, from 9 a.m. – 7 p.m.

This free community event features various activities designed to exhibit the rich cultures representing Africa, the Caribbean, and the Diaspora.

“I strongly encourage everyone to attend and take part in learning about the contributions the African and Caribbean community have made right here in Miami-Dade County,” said Commissioner Rolle. “There will be plenty of family activities to both entertain and educate guests.”

In addition to food and arts and crafts vendors, Africa Fest 2008 will also showcase traditional cultural performers, a parade, and live bands featuring acclaimed musicians of the African Diaspora. Guests can participate in a number of tournaments, including soccer, tennis, and domino. Several African, African American, Caribbean, and European associations, organizations, and businesses, will be on hand to educate patrons about their respective cultures. At least 2,000 attendees are expected throughout the day.

This year’s Africa Fest salutes Haitian Heritage Month. Attendees are asked to bring non-perishable food items to alleviate the food crisis currently affecting the country.
