Commentary With Winston Barnes: Taking Care

DAVIE – Far too many males in the community are doing a very poor job of taking care of themselves. Bad decisions are worsened by poor judgment, even at the urging of some thought to be loved ones. Others refuse to seek timely medical attention that can in many cases, prevent premature death.

I am among those who are convinced that quite a few males made a serious, sometimes tragic mistake in relocating from the home countries in the English speaking Caribbean. Most of the time they come to the U.S. totally un-prepared for life here.

Many times their very existence is based on their role as provider in the home. As tough economic times continue, some of these men have lost their jobs and along with that comes depression, and yes, ill-treatment, abuse even, from family members, right in their very homes.

As if this was not bad enough, many of these same men, have sought to avoid health issues, not even hoping they would go away, but simply refusing to deal with them.

In other words, the prognosis is not very positive for many males in the community. Some have realized rather late, that working hard as they were convinced to do, is not necessarily the best route to take, and not understanding and putting into practice the notion of working smartly; resulting in frustration and sometimes violence that is decimating too many families.
