Commentary with Winston Barnes: Doing The Best

DAVIE – Even the blowhard, spit in your face commentators on cable television make sense from time to time. As such, MSNBC’S Chris Mathews made some cogent observations two evenings ago that make sense, at least to those who want to behave in a sensible fashion.

Matthews says this country calls on black folk to go to school, get an education, get a decent job and take care of your family. He says this is exactly what Barack Obama did only for much of America to now claim they can’t vote for him because he is black.

This is part of a necessary debate, even though we should have long passed this stage. Necessary because there might just be some who are in desperate need to come to terms with the fact that we are really and truly in the twenty first century. We are centuries away from acceptable slavery, even.

In fact, it might be extremely retrograde for us to be even discussing this issue at this time. But that there are reactionaries around still, apparently can not be denied.

The older among us could take a cue from the younger among us if only on race relations. The change of cultural manifestations and practices, much of it originating in black urban areas of this country has helped point out much of the change that has taken place. As such, many of the young people find it difficult to make certain distinctions.

What is sad about some of the true nonsense that has been said about race and the candidacy of Barack Obama, is that they constitute not racism as such but absolute and unadulterated ignorance and backwardness.
