College of The Bahamas Basketball Program acquires NAIA Affiliation

NASSAU, Bahamas – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the Florida Sun Conference agreed to grant the College of The Bahamas Athletics Department an affiliate membership to the association and the conference, opening the door for COB’s men’s and women’s basketball teams to compete internationally with other collegiate teams.

COB Director of Athletics Greg Harshaw said the teams will gain international exposure. “This is our first step at creating the collegiate athletic spirit in The Bahamas,” he noted.

Mr. Harshaw made the announcement along with women’s and men’s team coaches respectively, Dr. Linda Davis, COB VP of Research and International Relations and Sean Bastian, COB Assistant Athletic Director.

COB’s Athletic Department has negotiated for the teams to play in a series of games during the 07/08 Florida Sun Conference, with the first men’s game against Johnson & Wales University team from North Miami took place Friday, October 26th at the Kendall Isaacs Gymnasium.

Mr. Bastian encouraged high school basketball coaches and players to come out view the level of division 3 level basketball.

Women’s coach Dr. Davis echoed the call saying, “I can assure the public that you will see a very competitive and exciting game.” The women’s team, she noted, also plans to travel to Melbourne, Florida to compete.

The COB women’s team will begin their season with a special rematch of last season’s championship series against the Johnson’s Lady Truckers. The team will defend the league pennant it won last season as well as play against colleges in the Florida Sun Conference.
