Miami – Current prospects for improving the economic well being of people in the Central America and Caribbean region will be the focus of the 29th annual Conference of the Americas which officially opened December 5 at the Intercontinental Hotel, in downtown Miami.
The summit titled “A Prosperous Third Border” will bring together over 700 leaders from public and private sectors as well as from the civil society out of Latin America, Caribbean and the United States to participate in workshops and plenary sessions on a range of topics affecting the region and its economic prospects.
In relation to Jamaica’s economic well-being, participants will begin interactive discussions tomorrow (Tuesday, Dec. 6) on major topics with specific reference such as disaster preparedness and relief, the Caribbean Single Market and Economy (CSME) and regional trading blocs, energy security, competitiveness, maritime security and trade, and the region’s response to HIV/AIDS.
Other industry sectors to be covered include telecommunications, tourism, energy with respect to the global oil crisis, transportation and logistics, agribusiness, apparel and assembly, financial services, intellectual property rights and the environment.
Jamaica’s Ambassador to the USA, Dr. Gordon Shirley will be among Jamaica’s participants as well as other governmental and private sector officials.
