Burger King serves up Interscholastic Singles Tennis Championship in Jamaica

Kingston, Jamaica – Some of Jamaica’s top junior tennis players will be on show for the 2010 Burger King Interscholastic Singles Championship which takes place from Thursday April 29- Sunday May 2 at the Eric Bell Tennis Centre.

Approximately 150 young tennis players from schools throughout Jamaica such as Ocho Rios High, MoBay High, Cross Keyes, Campion College, Norman Manley High, Hillel Academy, St Andrew High and Jamaica College will be competing in five categories: Boys and Girls 10 years and under, 12 years and under, 14 years and under, 16 years and 18 years.

Defending Champions Sicquena Sinclair, Shellita Haughton and Daniell Harris are all tipped to compete in this year’s championships. However Donovan Crumbie will not return to defend his title as he has exceeded the age limit. Crumbie is currently completing his studies at the KBC Learning Centre, partners of Tennis Jamaica.

Title sponsor Burger King has once again committed to supporting this exciting event. The fast food giant has been involved in tennis for over 15 years, and has made it a point of duty to continue its involvement in a bid to foster youth development through the sport of tennis.

Diana Blake-Bennett, Marketing Manager -Burger King, says youth development through sports and education is part of her company’s mandate. “This tournament is an excellent medium to achieve those goals as the game of tennis promotes discipline whilst enhancing health.”


Dianna Blake Bennett, Marketing Manager Burger King presents cheque of Seven Hundred Thousand dollars ( $700,000.00), the value of sponsorship for this year’s Burger King Interscholastic Tennis Championship to Tennis Jamaica representatives Lockett McGregor, Douglas Burke and Charles Pennycooke. The presentation was made on Wednesday, April 14 at a press conference announcing the tournament which will take place at the Eric Bell Tennis Centre on Thursday April 29 to Sunday May 2.

Blake went on to add that, “There are also great scholarship opportunities for tertiary education available through this game, however more involvement from schools, parents and Jamaica at large is required to ensure maximum development through the sport.”

The 2010 Burger King Interscholastic Tennis Championship takes place Thursday April 29 – Sunday May 2 at the Eric Bell Centre located at 2A Piccadilly Road Kingston 5.
