Bahamian-American artist, Alexis Caputo to perform in Miami tonight
MIAMI – Alexis Caputo, performance artist, poet, writer & activist will perform at the Diaspora Vibe Gallery, 3938 North Miami Avenue, Miami, on Friday, March 6th, 2009 at 7pm, tickets are $25, to RSVP call (305) 573-4046.
In this evening performance, New York/Florida based Caputo will perform excerpts from four of her written works and will include an eclectic mix of poetry, spoken word and dance (movement).
Presented in honor of Women’s History Month, Caputo incorporates iconic symbols and images used in depicting African-American life and culture as well as exploring themes of racism, politics and the role of women in society.
Alexis Caputo
Well-known for her written works, which include, Truths Carved from the Belly with Choreography By Luctricia Welters of Jubilee Dance Theatre, Woman of the Drum, The Proud Pilgrim and the autobiographical Deconstruction & Deliverance, Caputo has emerged as an original voice in theatre, poetry and performance. She’s appeared on radio and television, and has a diverse portfolio of performances. A graduate from New York University, Caputo has presented original performances at notable off-Broadway theaters: The Harlem Theatre Company, Abron’s Art Center/Henry Street Settlement and Dixon Place.
A Bahamian-American, Caputo has worked as a journalist profiling people throughout the Caribbean and has written numerous innovate works that have developed her voice as a performer and writer exploring issues of culture and identity.
Truths Carved from the Belly unfolds with a woman’s private beliefs shared through a self-introspective period and the use of multiple platforms of expression. Woman of the Drum is an exploration and social commentary which delves into gender specific relations in natural, political, domestic, educational and cultural environments. The Proud Pilgrim traces a woman’s journey during a period of resistance in which a poetic voice is given in the front lines of battles. Deconstruction & Deliverance blends text, movement and the use of poetry, including a touching tribute to African-American women in the arts.
