Bahamas Telecommunications Company launches new prepaid phone cards

NASSAU, Bahamas – For persons of modest means living in the Bahamas, the Bahamas Telecommunications Company Ltd. (BTC) launched their $5 and $10 denomination prepaid Cybercell phone cards in addition to their $20, $50 and $100 cards.

“Senior Citizens, teenagers and persons of modest means can ensure they always have accessibility to minutes to be able to use a phone as they need it and when they need it,” Vice President of Marketing and Sales at BTC, Marlon Johnson said during the launch at BTC head office on JFK Drive Tuesday, April 24, 2007.

“We believe it is a very significant step, as we try our best to make our customers happy,” he added.

Last year, said Mr. Johnson, BTC completed the first phase its “Voice of the Customer programme”. Representatives from the Corporation went throughout The Bahamas holding meetings and conducting surveys to find out what customers wanted.

After listening to the concerns of the public, BTC decided one of its first responses would be to launch the $5 and $10 denomination prepaid telephone cards, he said.

Mr. Johnson said the prepaid cards were universal.

“With the new Cybercell, you never have to worry about vendors not having your card,” he said. “GSM and QuikCell customers will both be able to use the new Cybercell cards and apply the time on their phones.

“In the meantime, vendors will continue to sell the existing GSM and QuikCell cards. We feel that we will be helping our valued customers by making the phone cards even more affordable.”

President and CEO of BTC, Leon Williams said, “We recognise that almost 63 per cent of our gross revenue comes from our wireless services, and almost 60 per cent of the gross of the wireless services comes from prepaid services.

“It is very important to us having listened to the voice of our customers that we do not marginalise our citizens along telecommunications lines, and we pull down the barriers to entry.

“So for those persons starting today, who cannot afford to get a $20 card, the $10 card is available and the $5 card is available,” Mr. Williams said.
