BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS – Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda the Hon. Baldwin Spencer is in the British Virgin Islands for the Forty-Ninth Meeting of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States OECS.
Prime Minister Spencer noted that the agenda for the two meeting is a packed one with Heads addressing issues ranging from the OECS Economic Union, the Impact of the Global Economic Crisis on the OECS to Energy and Climate Change.
The Country’s leader who is accompanied by Ambassador Anthony Liverpool and Foreign Service Officer Ms. Sandra Joseph, said that of interest to Antigua and Barbuda are the discussions on the issues surrounding the current financial difficulties of R. Allen Stanford, CLICO and British American Insurance.
Prime Minister Spencer also pointed out that the OECS Leaders will hold a special Caucus with Prime Minister of Barbados the Hon. David Thompson on wide ranging issues to include LIAT and the Regional Security System RSS.
Following the OECS Authority Meeting in the British Virgin Islands, Prime Minister Spencer will attend a special meeting of CARICOM Heads in Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday 24th May, convened by Prime Minister Patrick Manning.
The one-day meeting according to the Prime Minister Spencer is to devise a CARICOM strategy to combat the effects of the global economic crisis and prepare for a meeting between CARICOM and President of the United States Barack Obama to be held later this year in Washington.
This meeting is also a prelude to the Thirtieth Meeting of Heads of Government of CARICOM to be held in Guyana in July.
Finance and Economy Minister the Hon. Harold Lovell is the Acting Prime Minister in the absence of Prime Minister Spencer. The Prime Minister returns to the country on the weekend.
