OAS Launches Book on Sustainable Development in the Caribbean
WASHINGTON, DC – The General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) today launched a book, titled, “Sustainable Development in the Caribbean, Contemporary Issues, Challenges and Opportunities” that seeks to gather the diverse initiatives in this area to increase the knowledge base and literature in this field and foster the exchange of information and experiences.
The book, financed with contributions from the People’s Republic of China, was produced by the OAS Department of Sustainable Development and features technical papers and reports by specialists in the Department and in the Caribbean as well as speeches delivered in the last months by the leadership of the OAS General Secretariat on this issue.
In a statement marking the release of the book, OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza lauded the effort of producing this publication he said he hoped would catalyze further exchanges of information and experiences so that lessons learned and best practices may be built upon and enhanced.
“There is a diverse array of opportunities and outlets for sustainable development in the Caribbean, many of which are already being advanced with a great degree of success. However, the future holds many challenges for the region, especially those posed by climate change that must be addressed with urgent and concerted action by governments and development partners,” Secretary General Insulza said.
The book was launched in the framework of the Fifth Caribbean Environment Forum taking place in Jamaica from June 22 to 23, and will be launched at the OAS headquarters in Washington, DC, on June 28.
