Tropical Storm Fay forces South Florida Public Schools and County Courts to close
MIAMI Miami-Dade County public schools and county courts will be closed on Monday, August 18th due to the expected impact of Tropical Storm Fay. Miami-Dade County government offices, including the Port of Miami-Dade, will be open and conduct business as usual.
The 3-1-1 Answer Center will remain open 24 hours until further notice. Residents can call 3-1-1 in Miami-Dade or (305) 468-5900 outside of Miami-Dade County, TDD: (305) 468-5402. Specialists are taking calls in English, Spanish and Creole. Residents can access disaster-related information 24 hours a day at www.miamidade.gov/emergency.
BROWARD COUNTY
Broward County will close County Government offices effective Monday, August 18 at noon in order to facilitate protective response actions resulting from Tropical Storm Fay.
In addition, the Broward County Superintendent of Schools has announced that all Broward County public schools will be closed on Monday.
The following exceptions and clarifications are provided:
– The 17th Judicial Circuit of the Broward County Courts will close at noon on Monday, August 18, along with other Broward County Government offices. All Courthouse facilities and all branches of the courts will be closed at noon, including Clerk of Courts, Court Administration, Public Defender’s Office, State Attorney’s Office, and the Judiciary. Jurors should report on Monday morning as scheduled.
– Broward County Port Everglades and the Greater Fort Lauderdale International Airport will be open on Monday and will remain open unless weather conditions require closure.
– The Broward County Property Appraiser’s office will also close at noon on Monday, August 18.
– Broward County libraries will be closed all day on Monday.
– Broward County parks will be close at noon.
– Bus service will continue with normal operations on Monday as weather conditions permit.
– Animal Care shelters will be closed on Monday.
– Garbage and recycling pickup will be business as usual on Monday. Residents are reminded not to place bulky waste on swales for pickup.
There is a possibility that the Broward County Emergency Operations Center will announce a mandatory evacuation tomorrow of all residents living in mobile homes and those residents that live in low-lying areas. A coastal evacuation will not be ordered.
If an evacuation is ordered, regional shelters will be opened on Monday to accommodate evacuees. Shelter locations will be announced as they are readied. Residents that must evacuate are encouraged to stay with family or friends whenever possible. Special medical needs shelters may also be open on Monday to accommodate those residents that require special assistance.
Shelters will also be opened for homeless persons if necessary. Transportation will be provided from three pick-up points in the County beginning at noon on Monday. The pick-up points include Pompano Beach City Hall, 100 West Atlantic Blvd., Pompano Beach, the Salvation Army Lodge, 1445 West Broward Blvd., Fort Lauderdale and in south Broward at the corner of N. 21 Avenue and Lincoln Street and/or the corner of N. 21 Ave. and Sherman Street.
The Broward County Emergency Operations Center is monitoring Tropical Storm Fay and is partially activated. A full activation is scheduled for 7:00 a.m. on Monday.
