The South Florida Black Journalists Association addresses, “The Role Of Black Press” at annual luncheon
MIAMI – For three decades, the South Florida Black Journalists Association (SFBJA), a regional chapter of the NABJ, has united a community of journalists with the goals of media diversity, fairness and professional excellence.
The SFBJA will be hosting its annual Scholarship Awards luncheon Sunday, June 10, at 12:30 p.m. at the Trump International Sonesta Beach, 18001 Collins Ave., Sunny Isles Beach.
Guest speakers will include Bryan Monroe, editorial director of Ebony and Jet magazines, and Robert Beatty, the new publisher of the Broward Times.
Monroe, president of the National Association of Black Journalists, helped break the Don Imus story nationally, and he led the movement calling for Imus’s dismissal.
Beatty, former VP and legal advisor for The Miami Herald, recently acquired The Broward Times, one of the oldest and most established newspapers in South Florida that targets the black community.
Proceeds from the luncheon will benefit SFBJA’s Rochelle Bridges Memorial Scholarship, which has made it possible for dozens of aspiring young journalists of African ancestry to attend college.
The organization will also acknowledge journalists who have provided exceptional media coverage throughout South Florida.
