KINGSTON, Jamaica – The 2nd annual American Friends of Jamaica (AFJ)/ Cobb Lecture Series featured Dr. Derrick Deslandes as the guest speaker on the topic, “Rising Crime and Increasing Tourist in the Caribbean Arrivals in the Caribbean: Understanding and Managing the Contradiction”.
The event was held on Thursday, January 25 at the Undercroft of the Senate Building at the University of the West Indies (UWI).
In January, 2006, the AFJ/Cobb Lecture Series, designed to highlight excellence in research, was incorporated into UWI’s annual Research Awards Ceremony as a focal point of the celebration.
The series is funded by an endowment from the Cobb Family Foundation. Ambassador Sue McCourt Cobb, U.S. Ambassador to Jamaica from 2001-2005, delivered the Inaugural AFJ/Cobb Lecture at UWI on January 26, 2006.
Dr. Derrick Deslandes is a lecturer in the Department of Management Studies at UWI and represents the department on the Faculty Admissions Committee.
He received his Ph.D. in Marketing from Florida State University’s and a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Northwestern University Kellogg Graduate School of Business in Chicago.
Dr. Deslandes has authored several articles on tourism including, “Measuring Destination Image: Do the Scales Work?” published in Tourism Review International.
The AFJ/Cobb Lecture Series is organized by the Deputy Principal’s Office at UWI and the Jamaica Fulbright-Humphrey Alumni Association, with assistance from the United States Embassy’s Office of Public Affairs.
