Service providers and immigration advocates assist green card holders in their naturalization process, and eligible youth in their Deferred Action application
Miami – The Florida New Americans (FNA) program, an initiative of the Florida Immigrant Coalition, provides legal assistance, study materials and information to Floridians applying for US citizenship at free community events.
On Saturday September 13th, from 10 am to 3 pm the program is partnering with the Florida International University and Catholic Legal Services of the Archdiocese of Miami, not only to assist current eligible green-card holders with their citizenship application, but also to reach eligible undocumented youth and help them apply for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). This program will be held at Florida International University 11200 SW 8th St. Miami, FL 33199,
Only 10% of the eligible green-card holders apply for citizenship, both nationwide and in Florida. In the majority of the cases, applicants encounter several barriers like money, lack of information and assistance, which affect their capacity to apply.
The same happens with the applications to Deferred Action for Chilhood Arrivals (DACA). According to the Immigration Law Center, there are over 100,000 undocumented youth in Florida who might be eligible for DACA. However, the latest numbers released by USCIS reflect that only 250,700 Floridians have applied and only 20,500 have been approved.
With the help of our volunteers, Pro Bono attorneys and community partners, legal permanent residents who are eligible to become U.S. citizens or undocumented youth who are eligible to become DACA recipients, now can overcome some of these barriers.
