“2006 Africa Reconnect Program” comes to Miami

MIAMI – African culture, handed down for thousands of years – remain a living, vital and integral part of our daily life! This historic event will be part of the Heart of the City [HOC] Cultural Series that will be held on April 21 – 22, 2006, at the Joseph Caleb Auditorium, 5400 NW 22nd Avenue, Miami, Florida 33142.

Africa Reconnect program is a forum to educate, unite and reconnect African Americans with the African Continent and Africans in the Diaspora. Since its inception in September 2002, the reconnect program continues to showcase the importance of reconnecting with the motherland through arts and culture, education, international relations, festivals and exchange programs.

The theme for this year’s HOC Cultural Series program is “Expressions from the African Diaspora” featuring Africa’s greatest musical maestro Hugh Masekela on Friday, April 21, 2006, at 8pm at the Joseph Caleb Auditorium. The celebration continues on Saturday, April 22, from 1pm to 7pm where they will engage in dialogue, youth forum, cultural activities and a feast of African cuisine.

This year’s highlights include – a parade of nations on Friday, April 21st and the procession and recognition of all presidents of associations/organizations and titled African Chiefs/Nanas/Rasses/Elders on both days. Saturday’s program will also feature “Le Ballet Ivoire” Drumming & Dance Ensemble, cultural presentations and symposium.

Diaspora Arts Coalition [DAC] established the Africa Reconnect Program in September 2002 in collaboration with Miami-Dade Park and Recreation Department and with the full support of Dr. Barbara Carey-Shuler, Chairperson – Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners. The mission of Diaspora Arts Coalition, a not-for-profit organization based in Miami, Florida, is to empower the arts community of the African Diaspora in order to preserve our culture and heritage.
