US Cricket Open A First For South Florida

LAUDERHILL – On the weekend of December 4-6, 2009, Broward County will celebrate another first in American sports history! The Cricket Stadium at Central Broward Regional Park will be the venue for the First U.S. Cricket Open!

As a gesture of gratitude to the American cricket fan, and especially to the very supportive South Florida cricket communities, Cricket Council USA, a sports and entertainment management company, has made the U.S. Cricket Open free to the public. There will be free admission for all the games from Friday morning right through the Championship Match on Sunday afternoon.

Originally scheduled for April of this year, the first U.S. Cricket Open was moved to its early December dates out of respect to the international cricket tragedy in Lahore, Pakistan and the struggling economy. Ten teams have qualified for the first U.S. Cricket Open, and they will be split into two divisions – American and National. After a round-robin competition within each division, the two top teams from each division will progress to the Semi-Final Matches with the winners competing in the finals for the U.S. Cricket Open Championship Title and the $10,000 first prize.

The U.S. Cricket Open will be an annual major sporting event in South Florida. The global economic strife and the horrific attack on the Sri Lanka team overseas required Cricket Council USA to scale back this inaugural tournament.

However, the 2010 U.S. Cricket Open will include summer qualifying rounds at twelve regional tournaments throughout the United States and Canada. More than 400 cricket teams will be vying for twelve of the Final Sixteen spots in next year’s U.S. Cricket Open. Additionally, four international at-large spots will be filled by the highest ranked teams that are eligible from overseas.
