Urban League of Broward County Honors Jamaican Attorney

FT. LAUDERDALE – Jamaican national, Mrs. Ghenete Wright Muir, and attorney at law, was the recipient of the GenNext Momentum 2009 Award at the annual Equal Opportunity Day Gala of the Urban League of Broward County. The event was held last Saturday (Sept. 26) at the Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale.

Mrs. Wright Muir was among the four honorees awarded for extraordinary achievements in social justice and race relations, education, law and business diversity.

Congratulating the awardees, President of the Urban League, Broward County, Dr. Germaine Smith Baugh praised them for their outstanding contribution to community development in the South Florida region.

“I feel a tremendous honor to be recognized by this national organization,” she expressed in appreciation for the award. Mrs. Wright Muir credits her strong sense of social responsibility from her parents who worked in public service and education in Jamaica and the United States.

Assistant public defender for Broward County, attorney Wright Muir has been described as a future leader because of her involvement with youth programs in the community including the Kids and the Power of Work (KAPOW) where she works with students engaging them in options in professional careers. Through this program, the students are able to connect with business and economic opportunities through education.

With a passion for social justice, dedication to children and families, Mrs. Wright Muir has been described as a voice for children in the foster care system, due to abuse or neglect. In 2007, she was the recipient of the T.J. Reddick Bar Association’s Achievement award in recognition for her commitment, service and leadership in the Broward County legal community.
That same year, she was elected to the Florida Bar Young Lawyers Board of Governors.

Her leadership role extends to corporate and public service where she has been appointed President-elect of the Florida T.J. Reddick Bar Association, and is currently a board member of the Jamaica USA Chamber of Commerce (JAUSACC).

Among her many accolades, Mrs. Wright Muir was lauded by Jamaica’s Consul General Grant Griffiths, who indicated that the “GenNext Momentum” award reflected appreciation for her outstanding service and well-known activism in the legal community, business and political spheres of the South Florida community.

“Your notable achievement and sterling contribution will continue to impact positively on the Diasporic community and the wider society you so ably serve, and bring benefit to future generations,” she added.

Married with two sons, Mrs. Wright Muir also serves as a volunteer youth coach for the City of Sunrise recreational soccer league and simultaneously as a school volunteer at Sandpiper Elementary. Her social responsibility also includes sporting activities where she serves as a soccer coach.
