U.S. Ambassador for Trinidad affirms policy

WASHINGTON – U.S. visas processes seem to be of great interest to many in the Caribbean.

As a sovereign country, the U.S.A. is committed to balancing border security needs with welcoming and encouraging travel to the United States.

It is worth noting that the U.S. applies its immigration laws and visa regulations uniformly in every embassy and consulate across the world. We take the letter of the law very seriously, and thus all of our processes are according to U.S. legal norms, especially those enshrined in the Immigration and Naturalization Act of 1952.

Many U.S. officials have been impressed with consular operations in Embassy Port of Spain, particularly since we efficiently process a high volume of applications (some 36,000 annually).

According to Ambassador Beatrice W. Welters,
So far in 2010, our consular section has processed over 20,000 visa applications, approving 71% for visa issuance. I have personally seen consular officers at work interviewing applicants and can affirm that they are courteous and effective in dealing with the public while balancing the need for compliance with U.S. security measures and the letter of the law.
