Trinidad’s Ambassador Visits ITT To Seek Opportunities For Food and Food Processing Industries

CHICAGO – His Excellency Dr. Neil Parsan recently visited the Institute of Food Safety and Health of the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). The purpose of the visit was to look at technical cooperation opportunities for the food and food processing industries in Trinidad and Tobago. The director Institute for Food Safety and Health Dr. Robert E. Brackett proposed to the Ambassador, several initiatives that can be of benefit to Trinidad and Tobago.

Ambassador Parsan also suggested that the Institute of Food Safety and Health can be helpful to the manufacturers and exporters of food based products in Trinidad and Tobago, given the implementation of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), effective January 2012. The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) was signed into law by President Obama on January 4, 2011. It aims to ensure the U.S. food supply is safe by shifting the focus of federal regulators from responding to contamination to preventing it. This directly impacts on exports of food and food based products from Trinidad and Tobago to the United States.

Dr. Parsan also met with the president of the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) to discuss opportunities for technical corporation and student exchanges between IIT and the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT). Discussions were also pursued with the Executive Director of the Technology Park of the Technology and Business Center, IIT. Opportunities for collaboration with the Tamana Intech Park in Trinidad and Tobago are currently being explored.

The Trinidad and Tobago diplomat also met with the Executive Director of the School of Business to discuss opportunities for Trinidad and Tobago students leveraging funding and scholarship opportunities to further advance studies in business.
