Trinidad And Tobago Committed To Its Role As Chair-In-Office Of The Commonwealth

Trinidad’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. the Honourable Surujrattan Rambachan reaffirmed that Trinidad and Tobago is committed to fulfilling its obligations as Chair-in-Office of the Commonwealth. This statement was made during a recent courtesy call with His Excellency Eric Jenkinson, High Commissioner for the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Minister Rambachan reiterated Trinidad and Tobago’s position on the issues of climate change and the environment, and indicated that this country was committed to strengthening the position of smaller members of the Commonwealth in combating poverty.

Talks also focused on issues of regional concern that will be discussed at the upcoming CARICOM Heads of Government Conference in Jamaica. Among them, the drug trade and its impact on the youth; deportees and the need to establish adequate support and rehabilitation programmes; agricultural development; regional unity especially in the areas of trade relations and the prospects of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME).
