SCARBOROUGH, Tobago – For the past 26 years, Tobago’s regatta has garnered the attention of serious racers and fun-seeking sailors from around the world. Known to many as the “friendliest regatta” in the Caribbean, Tobago’s Carnival Regatta (www.sailweek.com), dubbed A Festival of Wind, will take center stage from February 10 –14, 2009.
Throughout the four racing days, yachtsmen will compete on varying levels from the highly experienced Racing Class to the less competitive Charter Class. Despite the main activity being racing, the regatta also prides itself in providing both participants and spectators with a fun-in-the-sun atmosphere. Sunset Lay afternoons, where visitors and locals can relax on the island’s sun-kissed beaches and catch some rays, are part of the itinerary for two of the four days. There will also be Friday and Saturday night ‘fetes’, sunset bonfires and barbeques.
During Lay Day, sailors will no doubt be ready for some competition of a different kind, such as Hula Hoop, Salsa, Limbo, Slip ‘n’ Slide, to name a few. Fuelled by the libations from the beach bar and heckled by the on-lookers, these landlubber activities will prove that even the most novel sailors can win a prize. With superior sailing conditions and a friendly island vibe, Tobago is the place to be for the most spirited sailing challenge in the Caribbean.
