Tampa Bay Caribbean community raising funds to build a Caribbean Hall of Fame center

TAMPA BAY – The Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce of Tampa Bay (CACCTB) hosted its first ever building fund, fundraising event to kick off efforts to build a brand new, self sustaining Caribbean Hall of Fame, Business, Cultural and Community Facility / Center in Tampa Bay.

On the agenda was a friendly cricket match between a Tampa Bay West Indies team and Tampa Bay India team. The day’s events comprised of Family, Fun, Food, Entertainment, and Sport with the Tampa Bay Caribbean and American community at large along with a successful food and clothing drive for the Hurricane victims of Haiti. They also managed to sneak in a successful voter’s registration drive.

A very diverse audience of Europeans, Africans, Asian, Hispanic and Caribbean attended, with over 450 persons including local community leaders and dignitaries. Mr. Francis Joseph, VP of CACCTB and VP of the Carib Project was quoted saying, “The importance of us coming together today shows the spirit within the Tampa Bay community which will make this center a reality.” Keynote speaker and supporter for the event was Consulate General of Antigua & Barbuda, the Honorable Mr. Ian Sweeney who also showed his support and made a contribution to the project.

The major success of this fundraising event was due to supporting efforts in the form of pledges, donations, food vendors, Hillsborough County Park and Recreation Services and sponsorships from small, medium and large local companies.

The Carib Project also includes support from the INDO-US Chamber of Commerce, Haitian Association Foundation, Caribbean Community Association, DJs, MCs, community leaders, attendees, sponsors, and vendors, who made this day possible.

The next event is planned for March 29th, 2009 which will also incorporate the similar theme.
