Castries, St. Lucia – The largest environmental initiative ever to be undertaken by the Government of St. Lucia will begin this September aimed at surmounting a major hurdle to socio-economic development on the west coast of the island.
The Anse La Raye Water Supply Improvement Project will enhance the water supply system in the village that will include an upgraded intake structure, new water treatment plant, storage tank, pump station and distribution pipelines.
The EC$6.0 million project funded under the EU SFA2003 Programme, Environment Management Fund and the Government of Saint Lucia will improve the quantity, quality and reliability of Anse La Raye Municipal Water Supply.
In August the contract to implementing the project was awarded to FARMEX Technologies Limited out of France. Managed by the Banana Industry Trust (BIT), Executive Officer Mr. Bertram Clarke is positive the team will complete the project equipment installation phase by the end of December 2009.
“FARMEX has acquired a real know how in the design and implementation of water systems for drinkable , irrigation and waste water reuse projects especially for products such as civil works for river water Intakes and water treatment units,” said Mr. Clarke. “We are confident that FARMEX will help us to empower the community of Anse La Raye and environs through sustainable natural resources management by the availability of an improved water services.”
Technical support will be provided by Halcrow Group Ltd., in conjunction with WASCO. Project oversight will be provided by the Office of the National Authorizing Officer of the Ministry of Economic Planning.
