St. Kitts & Nevis Prime Minister To Receive 2007 Trumpet Award

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – The Honorable Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, Prime Minister of the Federation of St. Kitts & Nevis, has been selected to receive the Global Award at the 15th Annual Trumpet Awards.

The ceremony will take place on January 22, 2007 at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas, NV and air on TV One network television stations across the US.

Prime Minister Douglas was selected to receive the 2007 Trumpet Awards’ Global Award due to his outstanding achievements as an individual and his accomplishments contributing toward the betterment of our global society. He is only the third individual from the Caribbean to receive a Trumpet Award in the Awards’ 15-year history. Also among those honored this year are Toni Braxton, CeCe Wynans, Michael Jordan, Clint Eastwood, and Dionne Warwick.

Most recently, Prime Minister Douglas has successfully spearheaded the Federation’s sustainable development plan for the transition from an economy driven by the agribusiness of sugarcane production – its primary industry for more than 300 years – to a service-oriented market economy driven by the hospitality and tourism industries.

Under his guidance and direction, the twin island nation is rapidly gaining recognition on a worldwide level as evidenced by its joining the ranks of host nations for the ICC (International Cricket Council) Cricket World Cup 2007, hosting of the 2005 F-CCA (Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association) Conference and Trade Show and also the steadily increasing popularity of the annual St. Kitts Music Festival.

Prime Minister Douglas has additionally taken on a leadership role in the fight against HIV/AIDS on an international scale and has been recognized for these humanitarian efforts by such luminaries as President George W. Bush, former President William Clinton and Mayor of New York Michael Bloomberg, among others. Other regional and international organizations in which Prime Minister Douglas is an active leader include the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) the World Bank and the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), to name a few.

The Honorable Dr. Denzil L. Douglas was sworn in as the Second Prime Minister of the Federation of St. Kitts & Nevis immediately following his party’s impressive election victory in 1995. He was reappointed as Prime Minister in 2000 and again for a third term in 2004. Prior to his political career, Dr. Douglas established and maintained his own private medical practice as a family physician after obtaining his medical degree in 1984. He was born on St. Kitts in the village of St. Paul’s and served as President of the St. Kitts-Nevis Medical Association for several years in the late 1980s.
