St.Kitts-Nevis Attorney General Held In Contempt

Basseterre St.Kitts On Friday, August 7, 2009, the High Court has found the Attorney General of St. Kitts and Nevis, Hon. Dennis Merchant, guilty of contempt of court.
The St.Kitts main opposition party The People’s Action Movement (PAM) welcomes this unprecedented decision in Caribbean and Commonwealth jurisprudence.

The people of St. Kitts and Nevis consider this decision a vindication of the rule of law in the Federation. Undoubtedly, this decision shows that Prime Minister Denzil Douglas and the Labour Government are not above the law.

Therefore, the People’s Action Movement calls upon the Hon. Dennis Merchant to forthwith tender his resignation as Attorney General of St.. Kitts and Nevis.

The People’s Action Movement regards such action as paramount to the protection of the rights and freedoms of the people of the Federation and the sanctity of the Constitution of St. Kitts and Nevis.

Therefore we further demand that the Prime Minister take immediate action to obtain the resignation of the Attorney General Hon. Dennis Merchant.
