BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS – The Treasury in St. Kitts is no longer accepting deposits under the decades old National Savings Scheme.
This has been disclosed by Parliamentary Representative for Central Basseterre, Hon. Marcella Liburd, who expressed concern in light of commercial banks increasing fees to keep accounts and levying charges for accounts which fall below specific balances.
She said the Minister of Finance, Prime Minister Dr. The Hon. Timothy Harris did not even have the courtesy and decency to inform persons who make deposits on their Savings account.
“You go to the window in the Treasury to make a deposit only to be told that you cannot deposit anymore money there. You cannot open new savings. No one has informed the public. There is no advanced notice to the depositors so that they can organise their finances, especially at a time when commercial banks are increasing fees,” said Liburd.
She accused the Timothy Harris PLP/CCM/PAM Government of totally disrespecting the ordinary people of St. Kitts and Nevis by not informing depositors in advance.
