St. Ann Jamaica Honors Centenarians

MAMMEE BAY, Jamaica — St. Ann, widely recognized among Jamaica’s parishes for longevity and its notable population of centenarians, was the focus of the second annual St. Ann Custos Commando Initiative Centenarian Storytelling Series.

The event, held recently at Bamboo Blu in Mammee Bay, brought together centenarians, family members, caregivers, students and community representatives to celebrate the parish’s older residents and preserve firsthand accounts of Jamaica’s history.

Custos of St. Ann Joseph Issa said the initiative is designed to preserve the country’s rich history by giving centenarians a platform to share their lived experiences.

During the program, Neville Davis, a St. Ann resident who recently turned 100, received a plaque from Issa in recognition of the milestone.

“Our Jamaican history is rich and powerful, and our centenarians possess this history because they have lived it,” Issa said. “They are able to provide firsthand accounts of historical events, cultural traditions and social changes. In telling their stories, we benefit greatly.”

More than 50 people attended, including centenarians, relatives, caregivers, students and community representatives. Organizers also recognized groups and agencies that support older adults, along with the caregivers and families who help preserve their stories.
