South Florida based Award winning Jamaican dub poet to launch Hail To Jamaica CD in JA

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Bella Oasis Day Spa in Jamaica will be hosting the launch of the Dub Poetry CD, “Hail to Jamaica” on Wednesday, December 15, 2010 6pm-9pm at 2A Hillcrest Avenue, Unit A, Kingston 6, Jamaica. The CD is the brainchild of award winning, Jamaican author, dub poet, writer and actor Malachi Smith.

Smith who is based in Florida is the prolific writer of Dub Poetry who pours out his love and passion for his homeland Jamaica is this must have release. The CD features several of Malachi’s award winning poems written about Jamaica: “My Jamaican Tongue”, “Change of Heart”, “Expiration”, and Jamaican favorites: “Miss My Jamaican Christmas”, “Going Home for Christmas”, “Miss Yuh Jamaica Gal”, and “Heaven Nuh Sweet like Jamaica Sah”.


Malachi Smith

Malachi’s performing style is engaging and all absorbing in the delivery of his image-provoking lines. He personifies the Jamaican who goes abroad and takes everything Jamaican with them. As a member of the Jamaican Diaspora of Southern Florida, Malachi perpetuates Jamaican culture at every opportunity. He is a favorite at Jamaican events and is called upon by the audience to perform even when he is not slated to be on the program. He captures the essence of Jamaica and transforms his feelings through vivid, artistic language and has performed in Jamaica, all across the United States, in Canada and the Caribbean.

A former member of the Jamaica Constabulary Force who migrated to the United States, Malachi is now an Acting Sergeant and Field Training Officer for the Metro-Dade Police Department in Miami, Florida. Staying true to his roots of discipline and hard-work, Malachi is a graduate of Miami-Dade College and Florida International University – with both bachelor and masters degrees. In Jamaica he attended White Marl Elementary School, Kingston Technical High School, St. Georges College Extension High School and the Jamaica School of Drama.

As a James Mitcher Fellow at University of Miami, Malachi studied poetry under Lorna Goodison, and playwriting under Fred D’Aguiar. He has won many awards for his writings including the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission’s (JCDC) 2009 Most Outstanding Writer award, and he was a nominee for International Reggae & World Music Awards (IRAWMA) 2009 Most Outstanding Poet award.

In November, 2010 Malachi won the JCDC Gold Medal for Adult Poetry, and he was also a nominee for the IRAWA Most Outstanding Poet award in 2010. Malachi is a board member of the Caribbean Education Foundation, and the Jamaica Ex-Police Association of Florida where he previously served as President.

Malachi has five CD collections to his credit: “Throw Two Punch”, “The Blacker the Berry”, “Middle Passage”, “Luv Dub Fever”, and his latest, “Hail to Jamaica”. He is married and is the father of two sons.
