Significant Increase in Guns Seized in Jamaica

KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Police High Command in Jamaica is reporting a significant increase in the number of illegal guns and ammunition, which have been seized by the security forces since the start of the year.

Figures released by the police show that between January and July this year, some 474 illegal firearms were seized, approximately 186 more than the amount recovered for the corresponding period last year. Some 53 guns were seized during operations in July, compared to 46 for the similar period last year.

Among the guns seized this year are: rifles, sub-machine guns, shotguns, pistols, revolvers and home-made guns.

Some 30,805 rounds of ammunition were also recovered during the first seven months of this year, compared to approximately 2,929 for the similar period last year. The police say 1,091 rounds of ammunition were seized during July, compared to 412 for the corresponding period last year.

The police note that of the 84 murders committed in July this year, only 55 involved the use of firearms, compared to 127 of the 160 murders committed over the same period last year.
