According to Wayne Wonder’s manager, an invitation had been extended to the singer to perform at the function but they were given absolutely no indication that he was there to receive an award.

“I was delighted … of course. It’s always a pleasure and an honour to be recognized for your hard work. But surpassing the pleasure was surprise. The organizers didn’t even hint that we were even being considered for any kind of award,” Wayne stated.

Wayne Wonder and songbird, Tessanne Chin, were the recipients from Jamaica.

Four of the Caribbean’s most outstanding artistes were paid post-humous tribute in dance – reggae icon, Bob Marley of Jamaica; ska great, Jackie Opel of Barbados; legendary calypso singer, Lord Kitchener of Trinidad and Cuba’s salsa singer, Celia Cruz .

In between performances, five acts were presented with Caribfest Awards.

Those chosen to receive the first ever Caribfest Awards were: Wayne Wonder and Tesanne Chin – Award of Excellence; Alison Hinds and Square One, Kassav and Edwin and Krosfyah – Lifetime Achievement Award.
