One Heart, One Minute with Opal: Silence

“Take rest, a field that has rested gives bountiful crop.” ~ Avid

HOLLYWOOD – The Gregorian calendar tells us the New Year, 2010, has arrived. Many of us will declare our wish to improve our lives. We will make affirmations to lose weight, learn a new skill, travel to distant places, etc. Let me add another – practice Silence or if you prefer, rest.

Let us take a lesson from nature, one of our greatest teachers. During the winter months, plants and animals make adjustments to ensure their survival, they become still. Many animals reduce their activity level by eating the food they gathered and stored during the warmer months while plants strip themselves bare and quietly concentrate on becoming more grounded by extending their root system.

Let us spend some time engaged in this difficult but most rewarding behavior of remaining still. Some believe that it is in the stillness we hear the voice of wisdom – we hear our Creator. As we become exposed to this voice, we find that our own creativity is awakened. We are able to have visions of a healthier, happier, wiser and more prosperous life. We find peace and we discover love. As Mahatma Gandhi said: “In the attitude of silence, the soul finds the path to a clearer light.”

After a period of busyness, preparing meals, entertaining, shopping, working etc. let us now reward ourselves or better, prepare ourselves for our new growth. Let us take the time, say an hour or even a day – you decide – and just be in the silence. Chose to stay in a darkened space or increase the potency of the occasion by adding light from one or more candles. Regardless, take the time to step away from the world and enter the universe within. Experience the transformational and healing properties of stillness – of silence. It is truly amazing.

“True silence is the rest of the mind, it is to the spirit what sleep is to the body.” ~ William Penn
