OAS Secretary General Meets with Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Member Countries

LIMA, Peru – The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, met today with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) within the framework of the 40th OAS General Assembly, currently taking place in Lima. The meeting focused on three important topics for the Caribbean countries: international help for Haiti, the situation in Honduras and the emergencies caused in the Caribbean region by torrential rain and flooding in previous weeks.

Secretary General Insulza thanked the Ministers for their support to the work the OAS is carrying out in the region, and expressed his wish to continue a common effort, which he considers the only way to guarantee a strong Caribbean presence in the international scene. On Haiti, Secretary General Insulza explained in detailed the role played by the Organization in the coordination of the international relief efforts, and in specific tasks for the future such as modernization of the cadastre system and land ownership infrastructure.

Also attending the meeting was the OAS Assistant Secretary General, Albert Ramdin, and the six secretaries that accompany Insulza in managing the Organization.
