OAS Election Observer Mission begins work ahead of July 11th Nevis Island Assembly elections

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS – The OAS Election Observer Mission began several rounds of engagement Thursday meeting with Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas and the St. Kitts and Nevis Electoral Commission ahead of Monday’s Nevis Island Assembly elections.

The OAS Team is headed by Mr. Paul Spencer of Antigua and Barbuda, the Chief of Mission and Advisor to the OAS Secretary General.

Team members held separate discussion with Chief Secretary, Mr. Joseph Edmeade; Chairman of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party, Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris; Supervisor of Elections, Mr. Leroy Benjamin; Chairman of the Electoral Commission, barrister-at-law Mr. Hesketh Benjamin and Member, Mr. William Dore and Deputy Political Leader of the People’s Action Movement, Hon. Eugene Hamilton.

The meeting with Prime Minister Douglas was attended by Cabinet Secretary Edmeade and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Security, Mrs. Astona Browne.

The team travelled to Nevis Thursday afternoon and was scheduled to meet with the Manger of the Electoral Office in Nevis, Ms. Beulah Mills and Registration Officer, Ms. Bernadette Lawrence.

They were also scheduled to meet with Political Leader of the Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM), the Hon. Vance Amory.

On Friday, the OAS Team meets with the Premier of Nevis and Political Leader of the Nevis Reformation Party (NRP), Hon. Joseph Parry.

Other members of the OAS Election Observer Mission are Deputy Chief of Mission, Charlotte Mc Dowell; Political Analyst, Micaela Martinet; Legal Adviser, Rueben Rudolph and General Co-ordinator, Tyler Finn.

The Washington-based OAS agreed to monitor the Nevis elections following a request from the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis.
