OAS Assistant Secretary General Briefs CARICOM Council on Haiti

PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti – The Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Ambassador Albert Ramdin, has briefed Foreign Affairs Ministers from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) on the latest political developments in OAS Member State Haiti.

The high-ranking OAS official was invited by the CARICOM Secretariat to make a presentation during the Community Council Meeting in Guyana this week.

During his presentation, Assistant Secretary General Ramdin described the current political climate in Haiti as tense, and stressed the need for political stability if the country is to move forward. Ramdin pointed out that in addition to the political dynamic, Haiti is still struggling to recover from a series of natural disasters, a cholera outbreak, infrastructural and institutional weaknesses, poverty, unemployment and other challenges.

“Haiti is a full fledged member of CARICOM, therefore CARICOM’s engagement and CARICOM’s voice is of critical importance, not only at this juncture, but in the long term,” Ramdin said. The OAS official has suggested that CARICOM may be able to assist by providing expertise to strengthen state institutions.

Ramdin is the Chairman of the Haiti Task Force at the OAS, and a Joint Electoral Observation Mission of the OAS and CARICOM is following the presidential and legislative elections.
