OAS Assistant Secretary General attends Haiti Conference in Santo Domingo

WASHINGTON, DC – The Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Albert Ramdin, is leading an OAS delegation to the Technical Preparatory Conference for Haiti taking place in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, March 15-17, 2010.

In Santo Domingo, Ambassador Ramdin, Chair of the OAS Haiti Group of Friends and Haiti Task Force, will present the OAS program support for Haiti and reiterate the organization’s commitment to governance and institutional strengthening in the areas of electoral processes and civil registry and identification, among others.

“The progress made by the Government of Haiti and the International community regarding the complex planning process is now more tangible. The OAS is pleased to be part of this important initiative and is participating in the Santo Domingo meeting to reaffirm the commitment of the Western hemisphere towards a more coordinated and impactful action in the country and to suggest concrete areas in which the organization can support the government of Haiti in its reconstruction efforts”, said Assistant Secretary General Ramdin.

The Technical Conference, hosted by the Government of the Dominican Republic with the support of the World Bank and the Canadian International Development Agency, prepares the March 31 Donor Conference on Haiti to be held in New York, and is an opportunity for the Governments of Haiti, the Dominican Republic, bilateral and multilateral partners to take stock of the Haiti’s Strategic National Development Plan and the outcomes of the Post Disaster Needs Assessment.

“I believe that it is important to respond effectively to the budgetary constraints of the Government of Haiti and therefore it is important to provide budget support to Haiti and channel the pledge financial resources through the Government so as to align spending with the vision, immediate needs and priorities as identified by the Government”, Ramdin added.

As part of the reconstruction planning process, the OAS is organizing, in collaboration with Haitian Diaspora organizations, the Haitian Diaspora Forum which will take place at the OAS Headquarters in Washington, DC, from March 21 to 23, 2010. The outcome of this forum will be presented to the Haitian Government, participating governments and agencies in the March 31 Donors Conference.
