North Miami Mayor Expresses Concerns Tonight Over Devastation in Haiti

NORTH MIAMI – North Miami Mayor Andre D. Pierre and the entire City Council express concern over this evening’s devastating earthquake and aftershocks that have brought extreme damage to areas surrounding Port-au-Prince, Haiti, including North Miami’s sister city, Delmas. The City Council postponed the remainder of this evening’s regular council meeting after learning of the widespread damage.

“It is with great sadness that I learn of the devastating earthquake that has hit Haiti this evening,” explains Mayor Pierre, “On behalf of the residents and the elected officials of the City of North Miami, I extend our hand to the people of Haiti that are suffering as a result of this tragedy. To our sister city, Delmas, we offer our hope for the strength to overcome this tragedy and our guidance at such a difficult time. Our prayers continue to be with those that are affected. We are here for our sister city to offer whatever assistance is possible at this time.”

North Miami is in the process of assembling a relief effort for earthquake victims, specific details will follow once preparations are finalized. Earlier this year, North Miami hosted city officials from Delmas for a full-week long training session, in Haitian-Creole, on emergency preparedness. The city is hopeful that that training has assisted officials in working through today’s tragedy.
