New Dates For Capital One Orange Bowl College Football Playoff

Future Dates for College Football Playoff Semifinals at the Capital One Orange Bowl Have Been Revised

SOUTH FLORIDA – The Orange Bowl Committee (OBC) announced that the dates for two College Football Playoff (CFP) Semifinals at the Capital One Orange Bowl have been revised.

The Playoff Semifinal in 2018 will now be played Saturday, Dec. 29, and the Playoff Semifinal for 2024 will be played on Saturday, Dec. 28. The games were both originally scheduled for Dec. 31.

The Playoff Semifinal for 2021 will remain on Friday, Dec. 31 as that is the nationally recognized holiday for New Year’s Day. Exact kickoff times will be announced during the respective Selection Days.

“The Capital One Orange Bowl was again presented with a unique opportunity by the CFP and ESPN, to revise the playing dates for two of the next three Playoff Semifinals to be hosted in South Florida,” said Michael B. Chavies, president and chair of the Orange Bowl Committee. “Moving these game dates will be a positive both for the out of town and local fans attending the game, as well as for those viewing on television nationally.”

“We had healthy discussions with a lot of people who love college football and we concluded that making these changes would be the right thing to do for our fans.” said Bill Hancock, Executive Director of the College Football Playoff. “These adjustments will allow more people to experience the games they enjoy so much.”

In three of the next 10 years, the Capital One Orange Bowl will host a College Football Playoff Semifinal.

This year (Friday, Dec. 30, 2016 at 8 p.m.) and in seven of the next 10 years, the Capital One Orange Bowl will feature a highly ranked team from the Atlantic Coast Conference (the champion, if not selected for the College Football Playoff) against the highest ranked available non-champion from the Big Ten, Southeastern Conference or Notre Dame.
