National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica (NDTC) to perform in South Florida with tribute to the late Prof. Rex Nettleford

CORAL SPRINGS – The internationally acclaimed National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica (NDTC) returns to South Florida on February 13 for a special one night performance at the Coral Springs Center for the Performing Arts.

The performance, in observance of Black History Month in February, will pay tribute to late Vice Chancellor Emeritus of the University of the West Indies (UWI), Professor Rex Nettleford, who was co-founder and artistic director of the NDTC.

Held under the patronage of Consul General to Miami, Sandra Grant Griffiths, the event is being organised by Jamaica Awareness Incorporated, a Florida-based cultural marketing group, in collaboration with the Jamaican Diaspora Southern United States, and the UWI Alumni Association’s South Florida chapter.

Director of Jamaica Awareness, Sydney Roberts, said that the programme will include excerpts from Nettleford’s highly acclaimed works.

Proceeds from the performance will benefit the Rex Nettleford Foundation, which supports scholars and programmes that promote the strengthening of West Indian society in the areas of social and cultural development through research, community service and intellectual excellence.

The NDTC was founded in 1962 at the time of Jamaica’s Independence from Great Britain.

The nearly 50-member company comprises dancers, singers and musicians, who continue to explore the intricacies of Jamaican culture through their outstanding performances.

The group last performed in South Florida in February 2007 to a sold-out crowd at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale.
