Music Legends Raise Funds for Jazz Great Melton Mustafa

MIAMI – Musical geniuses gathered Monday night to raise funds for one of the most celebrated jazz artists in the world – Melton Mustafa. At a jazz soiree at Crescendo’s Jazz and Blues Lounge in Miami, lovers of the saxophone, piano and drums, pledged financial support for medical treatment needed by the legendary jazz musician.

“Anyone in the jazz arena knows and respects Melton Mustafa,” said Miami-Dade Commissioner Barbara Jordan, who, along with Alonzo and Tracy mourning, was a part of the host committee. “He has given so much to the music industry and has devoted much of his time to educate young people about jazz.”

Mustafa is a world renowned trumpeter, composer, arranger, and music clinician. He has played at countless jazz festivals throughout the world, including Montreal and Italy. His credits include playing with the Duke Ellington Orchestra and the Count Basie Orchestra. He has performed with the likes of Nancy Wilson, Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. Mustafa is currently the Director of Jazz Studies at Florida Memorial University.

George Tandy, one of the jazz greats who participated in Monday’s fundraiser, praised Mustafa for his educational and artistic contribution to the industry. Tandy drew thunderous applause when he tickled the ivory after delivering a heartfelt plea of support.

“I have never met a man who, when you speak of him, he dignifies you with life and humanity,” said Tandy. “Melton saw to it that after 30 years, I went to Florida Memorial University and got my degree in Jazz Education. We are all students of Melton. I just want to say thank you.”

Anyone interested in donating to this worthy cause can make a contribution to the Melton Mustafa Medical Trust c/o Attorney N. Sabir, 18350 NW 2 Avenue, Fifth Floor, Miami Gardens, Florida 33169.
