Music Icons to be recognized at Dominica’s World Creole Music Festival 2010

Awards Will Highlight Artists’ Contribution to Creole Music Culture

Roseau, Dominica – Special Awards of recognition will be presented to six Musical Icons during the 14th Annual World Creole Music Festival in Dominica October, 29-31, 2010, at the Windsor Park Stadium. The Dominica Festivals Committee (DFC) and Digicel, the headline sponsor of the event, will make the presentations.

Receiving awards will be long serving and multiple crown winner, Calypsonian Dereck “the Hunter” St. Rose; Fitzroy Williams and Gordon Henderson, the creators of Cadence-lypso and for sustaining the group, Exile One; the two surviving members of the legendary Reggae group, Steel Pulse; Phillip “Chubby” Mark of Midnight Groovers, recognized as “the King of Cadence;” and Barbadian Soca group, Krosfyah for 25 years of playing Caribbean music.

The awards were created to recognize outstanding individuals and groups in recognition of the significant contributions of these artists towards the preservation, development and promotion of the music culture especially among Creole speaking people as well as in the Caribbean and the Caribbean Diasporas.

Highly anticipated by fans of this style of music, the 14th Annual World Creole Music Festival will be held October 29 – 31, 2010. A well-established Caribbean and international platform for artists of the genre, the festival is widely seen as one of the only truly indigenous music events in the Caribbean. Over the years, the festival has attracted some of the most renowned musical groups and soloists from the Creole-speaking World. Past performances included premier acts such as Exile One, Kassav, Gramacks/New Generations, Tabou Combo, Swinging Stars, La Perfecta and others as well as solo artists like Sean Paul, Ophelia, Tania St. Valle, Sakis, Franky Vincent, Sweet Mickey and Maxi Priest.
