Holding, who is a cricket commentator with the Sky Network, received an Honorary Doctor of Civil Law degree for his contribution to cricket.

Governor-General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Professor Kenneth Hall and his wife, the Most Hon. Mrs. Rheima Hall, who is Holding’s sister, attended the function.

Michael Holding, whom umpires dubbed ‘Whispering Death’ due to his smooth, silent run-up and devastating pace, is widely regarded as one of the greatest bowlers in the history of international cricket.

One of the key architects of the golden age of West Indies Cricket in the 1970s and 1980s, Holding took 249 test wickets in just 60 test matches. He also played in more than 100 one-day internationals.

“Michael Holding is said to be the fastest bowler in the field of cricket. The legendary sportsman has produced many devastating spells of bowling, none more memorable than in 1976 when he took 28 wickets during the West Indies tour of England,” a release from the University said.

Some 3,000 students graduated from the institution over the four days, with 13 separate ceremonies being held.
